New sabre J1s for the win, so in case no-one told you these things, this is all for your reference:

Oil your sabres regularly (once a month is very advisable especially for China sabres, these things rust like no-one's business) to prevent them from rusting. You can use cooking oil but I like WD-40. Keep your blades covered if you're not using them to prevent rust!!

Do not put your lamé in the washing machine - you can (and should) hand-wash it under the shower but do not apply any friction to the surface whatsoever.

Try to understand the rules of priority as fast as you can and constantly keep them in mind while you're training. It makes competitions and free fencing a lot easier and more fun!

Get used to wearing full gear. I cannot emphasize this enough especially since Clementi has no air-con and sabre fencers have to wear the lamé over the jacket.

I can't think of anything else, so I'll leave you with that! In the meantime, I hope someone makes a similar post for the new épée fencers (because I'm obviously not qualified to do that).

A division

A DIVISION IS TOMORROW!!!
It's men's epee tomorrow, women's epee and sabre on Tuesday. All the fencers fought hard at the competition despite falling sick, having competing OGL duties and recovering from fevers/flus/etc. The blood, sweat and tears was worth it - Team A's sabre girls won the bronze in the women's sabre team event!!

Requisite team photo!

From here onwards, make sure you guys keep in top form for the Nationals in April (I know most of the fencers don't read this blog. This should change when our juniors come in).

Because people have been asking, this is what I do at home to increase the length of my lunges:

1. Stretch at home. Follow all the simple stretching exercises that Bleong gets us to do.

2. Lunge in the living room - ensure that your arm is fully outstretched just before the lunge is complete. Make sure you practise this at the actual speed at which you'll be fencing during matches, or you're just going to be training yourself to lunge very slowly.

3. Practise with a run-up (ie. step forward lunges).

Your lunges should get longer. After this you can work on making use of the lunges during a match. This blog is almost dead. -.-''
i shall strive to keep it alive.

So, what is gonna happen recently is this smu competition or something organized by coach. It's optional as to whether or not to participate in it and there's a competition fee of about $40. i think it's held in the something of december. It's a 2 digit with 1 at the front so it's 1_ of december.

Okay you can't trust my memory.
And then, at the start of the year, March or something, coach is planning some malaysia trip to fence at the competition there. (woah, the font is comic sans!) okie...

Decided to type a little something here, since I'm bored and it would be good for you guys to know this stuff.

Not too sure if I've typed this in this blog or somewhere else before. But on to the 3 Dimensions of Fencing. Though I may be a epee specialist. These stuff applies to sabre fencing as well so no worries there.

(Do take note that this is what coach taught us a long time ago.)

So, you know how our world has three dimensions. They are the x, y and z axes. To the layman, it's left, right, back, front, up, down. Then Einstein found out that we can actually use some nifty math to play around with the fourth dimension - time. Whee! The physicist in me is getting excited.

Anyways, back to fencing. So, fencing has three dimensions as well!

The 3 dimensions of fencing are O. D. T.

1. Opportunity

2. Distance

3. Timing

Simply any fencing match can be broken down into these 3 portions.

When you are at the right distance, you try to find the right opportunity (or you make one), and attack at the right timing.

And the converse is true for defending, if you are at the right distance, you can strike at the right opportunity with the right timing and get the point on the counter attack.

Sounds simple enough? =p

The trick is knowing what is:

1. The right distance

2. The right timing

3. The right opportunity

Shall write more about these three "right stuffs" next time.

I also want to write about having a "repertoire" of movements.

And about the different tactics like AD, DA, AA, DD.

How to create a game plan.

How to analyze your opponent?

How to do the correct mental preparation before, during and after a tournament?

About the 4 aspects of fencing. Physical, Technical, Tactical, Psychological.

And a few other things that I cannot recall at this time.

Yeah, actually you guys can go borrow books from the library if you are interested.

But the best way to improve your fencing is by fencing more.

But fencing more is not just chalking up a large number of bouts or tournaments.

Each bout you have, whether practice or competitive, should have a purpose.

Likewise, each tournament you have should have a purpose as well.

When you are fencing someone stronger than you, do you want to try going all out? That means you use both offensive and defensive skills, with varied timing and tempo?

Or would you rather try a so-called "100% defense", so that you can train up your defense game?

When you are fencing someone on par with you? Do you want to train a certain skill? Maybe a counter attack, a lunge, a fleche, a circular sixte parry combined with a riposte on a lunge? Or maybe try the 3 or 4 different close quarter combat (CQC) moves?

When you are fencing someone weaker than you? Do you go all out to thrash the person 15-0 just to boost your ego? (That's a rhetorical question, the answer is no btw)

Or do you train a certain move? Maybe train your step-forward-lunge, and see if she/he can adapt to defend against it?

And would you be nice enough to remember what your opponent could improve on and tell him/her later on after the bout?

Hahaha, this is a long enough post. Well, I'll try to write more stuff as the days go by, though I know that other people in Singapore and around the world can read this stuff as well.

Happy training!! Besides, of course, getting heavily corps-a-corpsed and landing on the nearby extension cord on the unplastroned side of the body? (Such things only happen once in a millenia, and since it already happened last year, it shouldn't happen this year)

Firstly, cramps, usually a result of not stretching. How can these be cured?
1. DO NOT apply ice cos it makes the muscle contract further and its becomes more painful.

2. Straightening the limb IS NOT the cure for cramp. Straightening the MUSCLE is. This especially applies to cramps to the calf and the upper thigh. At least some of us would probably have seen the effect of misguided cramp treatment during competitions in 2006. Suffice to say, the effect can be devastating.

3. The treatment is, straighten the muscle then massage upwards towards the heart. If one has the deep heat rub thingy, it helps too of course.

SO note: Do a proper warmup before the comp. And drink isotonic drinks etcetcetc during the comp. That's just about the best you can do.

Secondly, sprains and strains, usually a result of the joint being bent in a position which God did not intend our joints to go. This one, just use the RICE treatment

Rest
Ice
Compression
Elevation

Of course, usually only ice and compression is available during comp, so play it by ear.

Well these two are the usual two that plague me during comps haha... Of course, the list of possible injuries are endless... ranging from cuts to penetrating chest injury (say, if one trips and falls while running about holding a broken blade looking for a spare). For those, I guess you could ask our other resident first aider Atikah...

Anyway just to end off, this is a small slide show which I made of the 2005-2006 season... Just some memories yea...

So cheers all, be you NSF or student. type='text'>how to take good care of ur precious blade 101

china blade - about 70 bucks
FIE blade - about 280 bucks i guess
So everytime you break a blade, you will help to pay the rent.

Blades usually break when:
1. you exert too much force
2. your opponent exert too much force
3. it's an old blade and you can feel the edges being very jagged
micro-cracks can occur and affect the strength of the blade.
yes, im serious, micro-cracks.

to prevent 1 and 2:
a. don't hit too hard
b. don't lunge or fleche too close to your opponent
c. if you know the guy is not able to control his speed and strength, play the distance game so that your blade won't have to bend too much.

to prevent 3.
you cannot really prevent it. no blades last forever. wear and tear will destroy everything eventually. but you can like keep ur blade properly in the bag, pvc pipe or a plastic hose. that way it won't like knock into stuff. it's more safe that way lar. for the blade. and for the people around you.

Fe2O3. more commonly known as rust.
most blades will rust (besides maraging blades). maraging blades have those stuff(chromium nickel and what not) in it to prevent it frrom rusting. however the dots that you see on the metal maraging blades are supposed to be impurities.
your china blade will rust. how to prevent it from rusting? keep it a nice dry cool place. or you could use silica gel i guess. just kope a packet of it from the next bag of "wang wang" you buy.
don't oil it unless you know what you're doing. cos some oil are not suitable and will remain on your blade. then you will have an oily slicky blade. maybe it will turn out to be like the rainbow "oil slick" blade.

This post is dedicated to our beloved comrade daniel who has went on ahead before us.
Yup, have fun in tekong, daniel! =p
we miss you!<br that for Xmas. i would just jump for joy lor.. not that jumping for joy is any big deal.. but still.. look at that!

What's the similarity between BF, SM, LM, V and CHN?
They are the type of blades that coach usually sell.

BF - Made at one of the best established forges in Europe, the Blaise Freres forge in Le Chambon-Feugerolles, France. Comes in blue, gold, silver, and black. Usually maraging blades. Usually FIE too. What are maraging blades? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maraging_steel

SM - cannot find any info on this online. but from experience, it's usually softer. rumour has it that it is easier to be broken. comes in more colours i think. oh, got rainbow colour. which looks like an oil spill you see on the road according to daniel tan.

LM - Russian blade. Heavier. More sturdy. harder to bend. harder to break. quite hard to flick. correction. almost impossible to flick.
http://www.blade-fencing.com/store/item.htm?itemid=300&blade=6b25a04e10c5c3

V - Leon paul blade. supposedly lightest blade in the world. Some FIE, some not FIE. if u look closely at the blade, there's a number on it that represents its flexibility. the bigger the number, the more flexible i think. ranges from 42-50 i think. http://www.leonpaul.com/acatalog/Shop_Home_Epee_Blades_Electric_22.html
This webpage has some of the blades sold by Leon Paul. go take a look.

CHN - china blades lor. there are 2 types of china blades. one type is the one the year1s are using. the older type is the one jon is using currently until he gets back his V-blade tml i think. they are the cheapest blade at 65 bucks. while FIE blades are like 200plus? so u can break 3 china blades until u regret not buying a FIE blade. Usually china blades differ a lot in quality, some are very easy to bend, so very flicky. some are very hard and durable, but brittle. so still break easily. I think everyone has broken at least one china blade. But china blades are usually heavier than the FIE blades lar. So up to you to buy 3 CHN blades or 1 FIE blade.

Btw, the difference in colour of the blade is just the difference in colour. No really significant diffence in durability, strength, or flexibility. It's all in the mind. I used to have a nice black BF blade. Then it broke. So, now i have a nice silver BF blade. And both of them have the same flexibility *flick*

To prevent your blade from breaking. One, don't hit too hard. Two, after getting your point, pull back your blade quickly so that you won't break it.

Btw, bladebreakers is the name of the beyblade group Tyson is in in the anime and manga "Beyblade"

Happy holidays!
Maurice

Why you guys should free fence more..

Hey guys, i really encourage u all to go and free fence.
Reasons being:

One, you need fencing exp to level up. Just like WoW, maplestory, the FF series or any other good RPG game. It has this experience system where u must kill monsters, do quest, find treasure, sew clothes, mine ore, make weapons, sell weapons, make fire, cut wood, fishing etcetcetc. Thus, it applies to real life as well. Amazing, but true. RPG games reflect real life quite well. there are the halfings (short fast people) the giants (tall lanky slower people) and the man ( the medium size one lor). Yeah, but back to my point. You seriously need to free fence if you ever want to be called a fencer.

Two, you need to get some exercise. There are tremedous benefits of exercise:

Reduce the risk of premature death

Reduce the risk of developing and/or dying from heart disease

Reduce high blood pressure or the risk of developing high blood pressure

Reduce high cholesterol or the risk of developing high cholesterol

Reduce the risk of developing colon cancer and breast cancer

Reduce the risk of developing diabetes

Reduce or maintain body weight or body fat

Build and maintain healthy muscles, bones, and joints

Reduce depression and anxiety

Improve psychological well-being

Enhanced work, recreation, and sport performance
See! No reason to not exercise. Exercise is good for you and fencing is one of the best exercise around that combines both mental and physical health benefits at the same time!

Three, it's fun. Seriously, it's hellavu fun when u get to flick a person's hand and score. Even if it's tyco. Even ur opponent is jumping up and down yelping in pain. Even if ur opponent is ur captain or good fren. It's fun!

Four, you'll probably not have that much time after JC to go free fencing like the amount of time you have now. Won't it be sad if one day after ur JC life, you look at ur fencing equipment. The white mask, white jacket, breeches, epee and "what's that half shirt thingy u wear on the inside called?" Then you suddenly think "eh, i buy all these equipment for what? i also din fence much. should sell them on ebay now." See! you don't want that to happen, right? RIGHT?? Then you should take full advantage of owning a full suit of fencing equipment and go and fence as much as possible!

Five, you don't this scenario to happen:

Junior : Eh senior, u fence how many years already ar?
Senior: hmm? about 3 lar. why u ask lehz?
J : cos it's like the way u fence horz. it's like you just started fencing onli.
-_-ll

Six, help coach pay the rent. Seriously. You see the aircon. The wi fi system. the doorbell. the water bill. the size of the place. the metal piste. the large large mirror. the ultraviolet anti bacteria thingy. the air freshener. the white board. the markers. the lights. the vending machine. the everything!. it's not free.. even private students have to pay for free fencing now. yups.. so no one is spared. but i guess the rent is still quite exp..

Seven. Novices is approaching. U guys dun want ur batch to be known as the first batch that has won no medals in their year right?? The previous 2 batches have won medals liaoz. With the record being held by my batch. So must jiayou and try to beat our record.

*once again, i doubt anyone actually reads this except a handful of people. like can count with my hands*

-Maurice

It's over!

There's a fencing camp held at FM on 27-28 Dec. Those are interested, just keep those days free. I guess coach will contact you all about it soon.
Then again, i have serious doubts about how many people from the club actually reads this blog.

Now that jon has covered his favourite basic attack move in fencing. I should now cover my basic attack move. The lunge.

Before you start fleching, you should actually learn how to lunge.

For a fast lunge, push as hard as possible onto the piste with ur backfeet to get enought momentum to move forward.
F = d (mv) / dt
Since m is constant
F = m dv/dt
F= ma
Where is a is the average acceleration, but since the amount of force from the extension of ur muscles in ur left/right thigh muscles is not constant, an integral of the area under the graph is needed to find the exact acceleration.
So fencing is not really about speed, otherwise known as velocity. It's about acceleration. (proven)

Yup, enough with the physics. More fencing theory. Though ur theoretically supposed to land on the heel of ur front foot and the angle at ur front leg is supposed to be 90 degrees. If you observe the videos containing fencing pros carefully, you wil find that they don't do it. Some of them drag their feet, some of them over lunge, some of them under lunge.

To categorise the various lunges and their prerequisites:
For a long lunge. You need long legs. (like daniel)
For a fast lunge. You need strong legs.
For a short lunge. You need short legs. (like jon)

So, after all that, what exactly is a good lunge?
It's actually just a lunge that allows you to score the point without getting hit. This is best done with good ODT.

*Still wondering who actually reads whatever we post here...*
*Good luck to those who still have S papers. Like Bio S. etc.. it's onli 3 more days!*
- Maurice

Torino Mens Epee Highlights

Le fleche

The anatomy of a good fleche:

1. Sensory neurone spots opponents hand pulled back against chest instead of outstretched

2. Sensory neurone notes that priority time is running out, opponent has priority, and one is most likely gonna lose and what-the-heck-lets-just-do-it

3.
